Unremittant dance of pride

This is my Livejournal. I don't have to be all cool and junk on my Livejournal. I can just be a drooling fanboy/egomaniac here, right? Cool.

So.

I freaking love getting linked by a major site. I mean, I love getting linked by anybody. I love being read. I love people commenting on the stuff I write.

But when someone like Scott Kurtz links me, it's not just an ego boost. It's a floodgate. The last time, it was like I was a rock star for fifteen minutes. Today's isn't quite like that -- I've been there before -- but it means that there are people coming and seeing by the thousand, for just this one day, and some small percentage of them will even stick around.

I never, ever want to link whore, or beg, or strongly hint to people I want them to link to me. People will if they want to. They won't if they don't want to. That's how it should be. The only advertising I've done is on Comixpedia, and that's only because that's their compensation model for the articles I've written. (It's easily recognizable too -- mine is the banner ad that really sucks). I've submitted a couple of articles to Boing Boing, because I thought they might appeal (and because I have an ego), and they haven't nibbled on them. But the word-of-mouth thing is the coolest thing ever.

And today, there's a lot of people coming and looking, and we're a very different website than we were in August.

I love this shit. I really do. Does that make me arrogant? Maybe, but I'm only getting paid in ego boost, so that works out.

In other news... my life is pretty damn good. And City of Heroes continues to be the best game I've ever played. And my sister kind of rocks, just for the record. How are you?

Awww, congrats!

[identity profile] demiurgent.livejournal.com 2004-10-12 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

By the by -- I've changed the style a bit, based on our last discussion on things. A little less exclusionary stuff, I hope. Just, you know, for the record.

How's by you, Action Haru?

Ah, cool. Thanks for listening to it. :)

Ehhh, not too bad. Exam time again. XD; But not too bad at all.

I just saw that, and was going to ask you if you had. :) Congratulations on your success, and on your life going well.

So, is Snarky on the banner? I've got a couple of places I could drop it.

[identity profile] demiurgent.livejournal.com 2004-10-12 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the banner predates Snarky.

The banner truly sucks, and is oversized (as per Comixpedia's specifications). Sooner or later, I'll either design or commission a link button and banner for people to use if they want.

And thanks. :)

OK, it'll be this, then.

Oh my God that's perfect.

[identity profile] sin-bed-comix.livejournal.com 2004-10-12 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks better with a one pixel border. It's on the [livejournal.com profile] sin_bed_comix info page.

I'll add it to KeenSpace (http://mckenzee.keenspace.com) later.

That's pretty darn schpankity, for certain. My only beef with it is that I think chopping the serifs off the tall letters (W,b,k) makes it look a little odd. But's that just me.

Also, congrats on being dinged a second time by Mssr. Kurtz, Eric.

[identity profile] mckenzee.livejournal.com 2004-10-13 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
The truncated serifs look better with a thin border around the banner, which it would usually have when linked. I agree that it is a little odd, but I like odd. :)

Every time someone other than me gets linked to places like that or even Penny Arcade, a little part of me dies inside. ;)

When you link to Websnark, God kills a puppy!

(senorcardgage) Congratchamations, Ethel! (/senorcardgage)

But the word-of-mouth thing is the coolest thing ever.

Word-of-mouth is the new black.

Seriously, I think it's the only way that "marginal" stuff -- webcomics, RPGs, SF books/TV, comic books (basically, everything I like) -- gets to grow big.

SF movies don't count, because they generally have the cash behind them -- and, in theory, invested studio support -- to get the marketing.

Which is why I'm continually trying to think of ways to make word-of-mouth for my games easy. I think I've learned at this point that self-promotion only goes so far. . . it's too easy to tune someone out.

Anywho, just noodling. And congrats again!

Yay! Linking is good. Websnark is good.

Does this mean we can talk about Mitchell now?
