In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Actually, if you've been able to stay even remotely abreast of the news, my compliments and sympathies in equal measure.

I've been stuck at dogin insane hours at work for what seems like months now (It's only been weeks... I think... possibly days... What is time again?)

Anyway, as I have to commute yet again, I'm leaving this short.

The first issue of this run'd had them described as " the most corrupt police force in America " - they were certainly up there when Blüdhaven was first introduced.

The run preceding this, the Tom Taylor/Bruno Redondo one, had included that corruption being cleansed with Superman supporting character Maggie Sawyer being appointed Blüdhaven police commissioner.

This run's following from that with " there's still problems in Blüdhaven's police force ". Part of it's been their officers cheerfully accepting laser guns, jetpacks and walking tanks (provided by Spheric Solutions, front for the run's overarching villains) to use in their duties.

Issue #125'd had one of the laser-gun-and-jetpack cops murdered - and Maggie, looking into his death, discovering that his " by the book " nature had just been his way of getting away with everything he wanted to.

She and Nightwing'd met the dead Officer Dietrich's killer - an apparent manifestation of Captain Hallow, the ghost of " the first [Blüdhaven cop] to die in the line of duty ", who supposedly punished those of the Blüdhaven police who didn't stand by their fellow officers.

Nightwing'd grappled with the ghost - who'd slipped his grip, leaving a cloak behind. Maggie'd got a shot off at the Captain as he fled - one that hit.

Captain Hallow still got away. )

Coming to you from a murderer's row of talent, Legends was basically the pilot episode of the post-Crisis DCU, introducing or reintroducing a lot of the characters and teams that would dominate the playing field for the near future. As a story, it left me a bit cold, with some pretty wooden dialogue and a slight story about humanity's need for heroes. Of course, with the God of Evil arguing the con position, there's not much nuance to be had.

Anyway, here's Amanda Waller, back when she was less of a villain than Darkseid.

The brief for this one was a little different and took a long journey through various iterations to the page - but essentially, it was about introducing the concept of the Multiverse (and "616" as the Marvel Universe's multiversal number) to new readers. Naturally, the burden had to fall on poor ol' Spidey - representative of the Marvel Universe and also a big multiverse guy since all his Spider-Verse shenanigans. -- Al Ewing

The scope of this New Gods run's zoomed in and out - it's balanced " Apokolips and New Genesis being menaced by a force emboldened by Darkseid's death " with " Scott and Barda protecting a child of prophecy from being killed by Orion ", each issue advancing both stories.

The latter story's on Earth - issue #6 brought the former there too, consequently pulling in Superman and the Justice League.

The former'd stepped in because he'd heard Orion and Scott.

The latter stepped in because someone else heard. )

When writing Big-2 books, unless you’re one of the handful of creators invited to plot the course of the entire shared universe, at some point you have to reconcile yourself to the notion that you are a cog in a machine. Some publishers, and some editors, are better than others at telling the cogs about the machine. Where it’s going, what it’s for. Who’s tinkering with it, and to what end. Why that new component suddenly appeared overnight, and what it means for your specific function. Ugh. More tortured metaphors. Point is, it’s easy to understand why the creative urge tends to carry a writer, when confronted with this reality, in one of two directions. They either a) aspire to become a driver of the machine, or b) focus so tightly on their own unique component within it - seeing it as a discrete device in its own right, with its own modes and motivations - that they can essentially ignore the rest. For myself, I’ve consciously tried to be in the former camp while instinctively falling into the latter. -- Si Spurrier
