"The government says that what they do now is consistent with American policy these twenty-five years. The opposition says 'no,' that we have confused power with virtue like all Superpowers in the past. That we are intervening abroad not out of considered judgement, but largely because our strength makes action easy, and action is generally easier than hard thought. Perhaps the argument comes to this: are we, after twenty-five years of defending the peace almost unknowingly passing that line and threatening the peace?"

It seems like a perfectly apropos statement for the situation we find ourselves in today, looking for a justification to invade Iraq while Palestine and Israel slowly move towards genocide.

What's depressing is it wasn't said about our current situation. Eric Sevareid, the CBS Evening News commentator and analyst, said it in December of 1966 about the Vietnam War. Sadly, we have not only learned from this, we've gotten even worse.
