So tell me something?

Why is it that, given that Livejournal is an authenticated system to begin with, you can't set display options in your Friends Page the same way you set them otherwise. For example, why couldn't your Friends Page automatically put in an LJ-Cut whenever someone has a post with a graphic more than 800 pixels wide (or whatever you wanted to do), or more than 1000 words long, or the like?

I mean, given that everyone has different opinions of how much information they'd want to see, or the appropriate types... why couldn't this be given over to their control? I mean, it'd be relatively trivial coding, wouldn't it?

My guess is it's just a feature they haven't considered yet. I think that's a great idea personally.

Because the folks that work for LJ (volunteer and paid) would probably see a stream of angry emails and posts from users that would be unhappy with that kind of setup.

Personally, I'd just be happy with a friends filter that stays filtered until you set it back to the default setting (everyone on your friends list).

You can use image placeholders. In your "Edit Info" page, search for "image placeholders" and you can choose to remove all images, or images over 320x240, or images over 640x480. It's very handy.

Not really, since it's *all* images and the size is tiny.

You're better off just blocking single specific images that are too large. The problem is really, really long posts.

(Eric: If it's ever one of mine, post a comment and I'll cut 'em.)

As I said, it's all images, or all images over one of two specific sizes. And yes, the sizes are tiny, but for those of us neurotic about how our friends page is formatted, they're the sizes that fit in most styles on most monitors. Personally, I block all images, and I love the feature, so it's a matter of preference.

My bet? It'd screw with formatting in cases where people only cut part of the post. Like, oh, say I'm writing a post about a book I just read, and it hits 2K words visible on someone else's friendslist -- including the word "spoiler" where I LJ-cut a paragraph about a plot point (and cut only that comment, so there's still text before and after the cut). If LJ auto-cut the entire post or just cut the last 1K words (say the spoiler-cut was in the last 1K), it'd override my cuttag, so nobody would be able to see the spoiler warning I'd intended to give them before reading.

Images would be less of a problem to cut, I'd think, if you could code it to only stick <lj-cut></lj-cut> around the <img src=> tag, nothing else in the post. But text is iffier, depending on how people pre-cut their posts.

(Now, what I'd like to see is a way for the cuttags to actually show up on the "read comments" page, instead of only being accessible from a friendspage or Day or Most Recent view. It'd be useful in cases where you use the tags for more than just "this is really long, so I'll cut it". Also, more options for customizing one's friendspage and friendsgroups in general, but.)

Hon? You know that, every time a user says this sort of thing, the project's complexity increases about three times, right?

But... yeah.

(Me, I wish they'd autowrap raw markup display, since that breaks things more than the few images placeholders don't cover. But that's me.)

I would merely, humbly settle for comment edit. Not that someone I knew from uni didn't, oh, submit a patch for that three YEARS ago.

that line is not quite as scary as the words "it'll be easy coding, take me no time at all" leaving your own mouth, when you're the person completing the project ^_^

To be honest, i'm just happy that the system is stable and free

Except for the lack of question mark at the end of the question, the grammar in your question makes me all fangirly*.

It's true: men with command of the English language are so hot.
