I've snarked some new strips this week. (I'm making an effort to hit strips I've been reading -- or recently been pointed to -- on Snark of late. Just... well, because I'm in that mood.)

I just did ones for Anywhere but Here, the Green Avenger and Candi. And they went over well.

As it turns out, they're all on Comic Genesis. Which has nothing to do with why they came up. ABH I was pointed too recently and I devoured it. Abby's comic I've been reading... well, for a while. It was a matter of time. Candi was more recent than Green Avenger, but it's also regular.

I admit, when I realized Candi was also Comic Genesis, I alluded to it in the subject line of the post.

I've now received my first piece of angry e-mail about doing it. To whit:

> Mr. Burn
>
> I'm glad you finally got around to snarking CG's strips. Clearly, you've
> been avoiding us because we're not friends of yours like Joe Manley. But
> you're blowing it. ABH and Green Avenger and Candi and mentioning
> Mindmistress? You should have spaced them out. Now it's clear you're
> just trying to get us out of the way so you can go back to ignoring us.
>
> If you cared about comics you would know this is where the next
> generation is coming from NOT WCN or anything Joe Manley does. You
> should know that. I know you read Devil's Panties and Two Lumps. Where
> do you think those came from? Modern Tales? HAH
>
> We'll be watching.

I have to admit -- I really, really love the HAH. It takes class to throw in a HAH.

Wow... um, I've been snarked a couple of times and I'm on ComicGenesis... well, residually.

Next year on BiscuitPress!

I promise.

Weird new non-bedfellow badly drawn comics also, IF I don't die from my real job first.

I'm not sure "class" is the word I would use.

Also... I want to be pissed at the stupidity of this, but... it's just too hilarious. I'm having trouble with the concept that the writer was even remotely serious. WTF?

Also:
--Joey Manley clearly owes you money.
--I should make a comic 'cuz then you'll totally snark it 'cuz we're friends. (Step 3: profit!)
--Feel the Burn, Mr.

I just find it silly. You've stated before that you snark things as they jump out at you. Not because they deserve press, or don't. And not just because you read it and enjoy it.

Why on earth would you ever need to "get them out of the way?"

You could have never commented on their comics at all.

On the other hand, it's similar to what I've been noticing on City of Heroes. Everyone got a free jetpack for the holidays. Everyone. And people are complaining about it. "I don't want to fly." "It looks silly." "I already fly, so it's useless."

Wah.

Cryptic could send every player a custom solid gold figurine of their highest level character, and players would complain about using gold instead of silver, or that their highest level character isn't their favorite, or that they don't like that costume slot, or the pose.

People just like to find places to complain.

If read as deliberately tongue in cheek, then it's actually pretty funny. Perhaps this person suffers from an overabundance of nuance. That sort of thing always comes back to bite you in the digital ass. Serious or otherwise, the HAH is perfect.

I know nothing of the drama between comic-service providers, but I'm personally very happy you snarked those strips. I was already reading Green Avenger, but I'd never heard of Anywhere But Here... Yeah, I'm caught up on the archives now. Congratulations, your words can demand hours of activity out of a near-stranger. Damn you Richards! Erm, sorry. Burns, I meant Burns.

And Two Lumps comes from the sick mind of Jay Grant and his utterly wasted on him better half?

I think that an hypothetical polythesitic-style God Of Webcomics who actually did control the entire cartooning universe through his reviews would get less mail about it than you.

On that topic, I think it would be a good idea to invent an Egyptian-style god of webcomics, immediately if possible. His divine avatar would be as follows: From the neck down, he'd be a normal human, but instead of a normal human head he'd have the head of a Scott McCloud or something. I will name him 'Snarkhotep.'

Date: 2005-12-08 08:10 pm (UTC)

I dunno if that'd work. The suffix "-hotep" supposedly means "is satisfied" (therefore "Amonhotep" is "Amon is satisfied" and so forth.)

And if it got out that the Snark could be satisfied, the drama, man, the drama...

Hey, now. Or rather, HAH now. Obviously one vitriolic email does not a bad environment make. Genners are for the most part accepting and kind, and the admin are fantastic, especially considering how difficult it must be to wrangle servers supporting literally thousands of comics, hundreds of which are popular.

I am thankful for the Comic Genesis environment and the people hosted there every day.
