I admit it. I've become, late in life, a Power Rangers fan. And by far my favorite series is S.P.D. And by far my favorite character is Doggie Kruger. Who in one of the crossover episodes we see distinctively outdoing Fucking Tommy, so that just verifies that he's the best of the best.

I hate Tommy. But I digress.

Anyway, Weds has made for me what seems to be the ultimate Doggie Kruger icon, and now I share it with you.

Don't fuck with the big blue dog.

I love SPD best, too, and I love how Doggie gets his.

And okay, I have to admit being a Tommy fan, but yes, Kruger showing Tommy up is good.

The only problem I have with any Power Rangers show is the repeating of themselves and each other.

"No one gets inside!" comes to mind.

"Huh, Tommy's a doctor now?" Or words to that effect, when the second Black Ranger was chatting with the Yellow Dino Thunder Ranger in "Once A Ranger". :) I do like how Tommy got to have his own Incarnation Battle during Dino Thunder, fighting aspects of himself (original Green, tiger-themed White, and Zeo Ranger Red).

I agree, that's one of the best episodes.

I should mention -- I hate Tommy, but I actually like Jason David Frank a lot. He's clearly an excellent stuntman and stunt coordinator, he absolutely sells fight scenes better than most good pro wrestlers, and he never, ever feels like he isn't buying into the material.

And while I hate Tommy, I hate him less in Dino Thunder. His OMGWTFBBQSOAWESOMETOMMY nature is significantly muted, though not eliminated.

Looking at the whole MMPR through midrange Turbo years it's hard not to cringe when he's, though. Because he's so awesome. Because he's so Tommy.

The only good thing about the Turbo movie was when the returning Jason is fighting Tommy, and announces "now I'm the one with all the muscles and all the power!" But then, I liked Jason, so I'd say that, right?

(The best thing about the Turbo Miniseries was T.J., and by definition that was post-Tommy. And then we hit In Space, and things start to get really good, for my money.)

Turbo and Wild Force are the two I can't really watch, so I guess I missed the OMGTOMMYness of them.

Followed by Lightspeed Rescue and Time Force -- but those may just be that I haven't seen enough to get attached.

MightyMorphin exploited one of my favourite tropes -- the villain redeemed -- so that's what planted my love for the Tommy.

In Space was also pretty good, yeah.

Yay, Toon Disney!

Always time to keep your first childhood going rather than have to have a second one like some poor people!

Ninja Force went "villain redeemed" in spades, with the Crimson and Navy Rangers being major villains for a significant chunk of the storyline, and then uneasy allies for a while after that. It also broke the pattern of the redeemed villain also being the Sixth Ranger...instead they were the fourth and fifth ones.

But, far more obsessed people than I have written much more on the topic. :)

I actually loved Wild Force. Possibly because of the camp aspect, mind, which might be a reason not to love it.

Turbo, on the other hand... yeah, pretty much unwatchable. That In Space was so good after Turbo was so bad really says something about... well, I guess about Justin. Poor kid.

Trust me. The original was more so. Sentai is always going to be a blend of silly and not (I could go on and on on 'in genre' and 'out of genre', but Carranger, Turbo's source material has been called a parody of Turboranger which was about ten years earlier. And when you hit that level... wow.

Lightspeed and Time Force were pretty good. And for once, I can say I preferred the american to the source on Time Force. Partially because the OP hurt my ears. The team up movie rocked, though.

Yes. SPD is the pinnacle of Power Rangerdom. Operation Overdrive got cooler just by having a two episode guest shot from one of the SPD Ranger.

Yes, and it was the Red Ranger [won't say which so as not to spoiler]!

And it wasn't one of the Red Rangers from the SPD run! How cool is that!

I loved the all star OO. And that Red Ranger just sealed the deal.

That said, I wish they'd had a Sixth Ranger too. And better representation of the pre-Disney era.

But still. It was deeply fun.

"Morphinomenal!"

Although they are parentless, they always have a parental figure, and they seem to have grown up to be virtuous without benefit of mom and dad.

OMG Power Rangers destroying the family! Oh, how I love that ironic concept.

Welcome to the fold. Deka Ranger is one of my favorite, though both Aba Ranger and Magi Ranger are pretty damn epic in their own right.

Never got into Abaranger, partially since the subbing job died out. Magi was good, and I really liked how Boukenger played out. I was SO glad to find a Dai Voyager at TRU a few weeks ago. The 'real' one, since they didn't change the molds, thank god.

It's kind of reassuring that it isn't just my roomie and I who enjoyed SPD more than the other series. I guess it's about how they're specially trained cops, not teens with attitude.

So you're going to break out the kruger icon when you're not fucking around?

I have this entirely fun mp3 that is Masaaki Endo, who did a lot of the Ranger themes playing live somewhere. It starts with him doing the speed-metal version of the MMPR theme from the first movie.

And then he spins it into the Abaranger theme.

Man kicks that guitar.

O_o Endo did Aba's theme? And he didn't do many others ISFAIK. Maybe he did Gao, but I'm pretty sure not on others. Doesn't mean he didn't cover them, as he's the kind to do so. I know Kageyama Hironobu did Maskman's OP.

Ironically...

It really IS a sabre. Or at least a sword. Dougie Krooger aka Dekamaster's (I'm phoneticizing the diff on the other ocean)'s sword is the D-sword Vega.

I've been a Rangers fan since it first came out. Yes, I was a teenager, but I remember catching the original Japanese show at GenCon 94. I have to say, though, I have no love or hate for Tommy. He was a kick-ass ranger in green, but the rest of his ranger selves sucked until Dino Thunder. As for Krueger pwning Tommy in the crossover, remember the guy in the Black Ranger suit wasn't JDF. (Who, at the time it was filmed, I believe, was working on one of his side projects.)

As for my favorite ranger team.... I have to go with SPD too. Although the Dino Thunder crew was pretty good, and the original team rocks hard. I found a meme online somewhere that was Power Rangers centric. I'll try to find it, if you want a copy.
