How not to make a statement
Mar. 24th, 2003 03:26 amMichael Moore is a very smart man. He's also passionate about liberal causes, and about the plight of the average man. I like him. I respect him. I enjoy his movies and TV shows.
Michael Moore was a complete idiot at the Oscars. To the point that he hurt his own cause.
Michael Moore's speech was incendiary, designed to make it clear how illegitimate the administration is and how illegitimate our reasons to be at war are. And in both cases, he's right. Bush wasn't elected -- he was appointed. And quite frankly, we should not be in this war.
Several other people made their antiwar sentiments plain, and were applauded. Adrien Brody managed to make the point eloquently and poignantly, and managed to shut down the repressive antispeech measures the Oscars had imposed this year. But Michael Moore, surrounded by all the Documentary nominees he beat for his statue, wasn't trying to convince. He was trying to enflame. He was making a ruckus. He was waving his arms and saying "look at me!"
It's exactly what Ralph Nader did in the 2000 election, and it got us into this mess. I am so damn tired of watching as the far left ruins it for the rest of us Liberals. Michael Moore marginalized his own message. He sounded stupid.
He got booed. Who boos people at an Oscars speech? More to the question -- who gets booed. Liberals? Please. This was the Oscars. As Steve Martin said earlier in the evening. "All sorts can be movie stars. The Thin or the Skinny. Those who are Democrats... <long pause> and the Skinny."
What gets booed is lack of decorum.
You blew it, Michael. Thirty seconds before all of America, and you blew it.
