This spoils an April Fool's joke involving Youtube. If you don't care, already know it, or whatever, then click the cut and enjoy.

Thank Christ.

No, I don't think that Youtube linking all their Featured Videos to the Rick Roll video of Never Gonna Give You Up is particularly clever. At the same time, I think it's clever enough for an April Fool's day gag.

However, by doing this, Rick Rolling officially becomes passe. Dad has now done it. It is ineffably uncool now. Those who enjoy the art of pranking will move on to new ground.

It will not die overnight, but this is the death knell, mark my words. All Rick's Base are now Belong To Them. This one's number now gets retired.

And thank Christ for that. It stopped being even vaguely amusing like a month ago. Or more.

I personally think it's hilarious that Youtube did it, but I agree, as of today Rick Rolling is basically dead, unless someone bigger than Youtube decides to do it in an even less obvious-in-retrospect way. And that would take someone like Google or MSN risking alienating a good chunk of their userbase.

So, yeah. Pretty much dead now.

Well, Youtube is owned by Google isn't it? I dunno if this equates to Google doing it, or is foreshadowing for future years but *shrugs*

If Google search was rigged so that all searches had you Rickrolled...now THAT would be the end of it.

It would also result in history's most hilarious 15% stock price fall.

I'm sometimes thankful that I'm Internet-ignorant. I saw the phrase "rickrolling" over at XKCD, but didn't know exactly WHAT it was until a few days ago.

I don't suppose I missed that much.

As I do not regularly read XKCD, I didn't even get that.

Honestly, it's a little distressing to have an entire Internet meme flare up and die without my even realizing it was there, but then again, I'm not really on the cutting edge of this sort of thing. I don't even know that I can see the cutting edge from where I stand with the help of powerful telescopy. It wasn't that long ago that I figured out what O RLY? was all about fer cryin' out loud.

Rickrolling? Pft. I'm all about... buttrolling. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fbGkxcY7YFU)

(It's amusing to see the reaction of heterosexual males who aren't deeply secure in their manhood to this video.)

There is also a lot of potential in this video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=8i8vjtoX8q0) for what I will call... luvrolling.

Risque subject matter aside, that is an incredibly boring song AND video.

On an unrelated note

But like AYB, there will still be occasional room for a clever reinterpretation.

Occasionally.

I'm looking forward to not having to think every week or so: "But I kinda like Rick Astley's songs! I mean, yeah, don't look directly at the visual portion, but as pop songs to be consumed by the masses in the 1980s, they're damned near perfect."

Off-topic...

Family Guy did it last season.

Remember the episode where Peter goes back in time. Brian picks up the guitar and says "And now, time for a song by a gay guy.".

Never Gonna Give You Up starts playing, and the over-excited clapping guy starts cheering. I didn't even catch it until the second time it aired, but Family Guy rick-rolled its viewers.
