For those of you who braved the dumbass DRM crap and got the game anyway, feel free to Buddy me as 'demiurgent.' Let me know your names, so I can start getting preferential download treatment to your various and sundry critters.

(If the DRM is a dealbreaker for you, I fully understand. We really, really, really, really, really don't need to rehash the issue in comments. The DRM is very, very badly done, and was stupid in the first place. It is a badness. It is evil. I decided to play anyway. Life can be like that sometimes. ;) )

fadeaccompli! You can see my peaceful, adorable Fairy Teal Deer, from planet The Interwebz. (Who will, no doubt, end up ravaging the spaceways in someone else's game, or brutally oppressing all in their path in the civ stage, because that's how it tends to work.)

Heh. The very first creature my very next creature found? The Teal Protodeer.

Of course, that creature was my brand new 'Haagenti,' so he ate them.

A fitting ending for the Teal Protodeer, really. It's a sad-eyed little herbivore, just ready to be munched on!

There are a few variants in there with hands, but we try not to talk about those ones.

(And now I'm wondering if herbivores ever get made into epic critters. The idea of the Fairy Teal Deer stomping across the landscape destroying all in its path is sort of entertaining.)

For the record, I'm not not playing Spore because of anything to do with the installation; I've already got the PC version of Mass Effect, so it's all mu to me. I'm not playing Spore because I barely have the patience for Civilization, much less a game that starts at amino acids and makes it to Civilization eventually. :)

Oh, it's worse than that.

It hits Civilization... and then moves past it into Space Rangers. ;)

They're very, very different games. Like I said, way more Space Rangers than Alpha Centauri, at that point. Essentially, the cell stage is a freeform arcade game, the creature stage is an open ended RPG, the tribal stage is a Real Time Strategy game, the Civilization game is halfway between RTS and Civilization, and in the Space game you're in a Spaceship flying around doing missions, making alliances, fighting off pirates -- stuff like that.

So literally, Spores is Alpha Centauri, Civilization, RPG, and Space Ranges on Acid. Amino Acid, even, with a dash of Sim City. How will it not win every PC Gaming award known to man?

Of course, a mere couple of day after I said that, my mother comes home from a road trip, and what does she have to reward me for looking after the hound in her absence?

A copy of Spore.

Oh dear.

(I am, unsurprisingly, ZGryphon, though I haven't made much yet other than a few variations of the mighty Clawsaurus.)

Dude, for the record I'm trying to credit your work where I can, but you've got the best damn stuff to template and enhance. (Not to mention in-game 'tweak creature' effects.) Seriously, you're totally a Golden Spode.

Right now, the stupid DRM scheme has kept me from getting it. What can you tell me about the game itself? Fun? Is it fun without online access? I'm basically still on the fence.

I'm skipping buying it (for the DRM and for being really ticked off at EA for shoddy bug-testing both) but I'd love if you keep posting about it because I'm curious how it actually plays. It's an interesting idea but I also remember SimLife and SimEarth and those both sorta fell short. Since they put a lot more dev time into this (and have far, far more powerful computing to work with) I'm guessing Spore will be entirely different, really, but I'm still curious if they got it right, so to speak. I'm also curious how the multiplayer-but-not-really thing works.
