Okay, it's official. I would in fact like a spare Dreamwidth code if someone has one.

The crossposting functionality is what got me. As near as I can tell, you can post to Dreamwidth and it will automatically post to Livejournal. While Dreamwidth won't be able to truly import the LJ userbase, this means I'll be able to post to a single service and have my posts show up at both, and that would be... nice.

I'm loving this...I'm going to sign up for another service, so I can post here too? Wait, what? Logic check, anyone?

There's people that will be using DW for Other Things, causing some of us to have a need to use both services. Being able to match content on both sides is a bonus if you're already going to be using both.

Just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.

Silly spouse. The entire world is obviously comprised of binary, mutually exclusive choices between the rational and the irrational.

I apologize for not having a more coherent initial posting, other than a basic sarcastic, multi-word, "Why?"

I was expecting a response from Eric along the lines of, "NEW SHINY TOY WITH RED PAINT!" or at least some mirth at duplicating one's existence online to infinity because, honestly, new services become available every day that someone's peeing their pants in excitement for.

My question should have read, "I'm confused by everyone's need to create massive echo chambers of their thoughts and ideas on this here internets." My reasoning for asking being: it crams up search engines when looking for original news and posts, doesn't make site ratings better, and does it really, honestly, give you more eyeballs on your content? Will it really make your life better/easier? I suppose, in the end, I should probably just should have asked, simply and succinctly, "Why?"

Perhaps I would have gotten a better response than "...using DW for Other Things." Which still begs the question, "Why?" Even if the answer is, "new shiny toy with hero smash features," or, "all the cool kids are." I'd be happier than having to ask, again, "Why?"

More or less? 'Because I want people to read it, no matter which side of the divide they're on.' Just because one is on both isn't going to be the case with others. And people are, by and large, as lazy as they can make it. So those who are keeping to one side or the other of the divide, they won't see X. So to those who care, crossposting is their 'best of both worlds'.

Simply enough, it doesn't matter what it does in the macro, so long as it covers their situation in the micro.

Just so you know, that "Why?" doesn't come across through the sarcasm, as I see no such question, just a lot of passive-aggressive sarcasm. Maybe you'd have better luck in the future skipping the sarcasm and just asking outright. The result otherwise makes it look like you were just being a dick, whether you meant it that way or not. It'd also keep you from having to (from your perspective) repeat yourself when you're inevitably misunderstood.

There are friends of mine who are going over to Dreamwidth and leaving Livejournal. I was already planning to open a Dreamwidth account to keep in touch with them.

By having synchronous posting in both communities, I can post once and have that post read by both discrete groups of my friends.

We have begun to see the inevitable fragmentation of Livejournal's critical mass. Whatever I can do to keep my own personal community of friends connected to me -- especially when it ends up meaning no extra work on my part -- I'm going to do.

Does it make more logical sense now? :)

This is pretty much it for me. A lot of the people I care about are moving, or at least dabbling in moving. I might not be completely jumping ship, but I'm willing to test the waters.

Besides, maybe I can get my name before someone grabs it to make one post directing people to their payperview porn site. =(

I'll admit, getting my name would be nice. Though it wasn't the sheer race Weds's was.
