So... Keenspace, which along with Keenspot has had the slowest frickin' forums on the face of the planet, finally said the Hell with it, trashed the old UBB based boards, and put up entirely new boards based on PHP. This is good. This is fine. This is forward thinking, fresh and fun filled for the whole family.

For a full week they've been down, as they made this transition. I just successfully connected to them for the first time.

They're at best half the speed of the old forums. Honestly.

What is going on at Keen's servers? It's not like Bulletin Board software's hard to configure, and they seem to have a dedicated server for these boards.

(I should be more charitable. After all, Bulletin Board technology is still so new and untested. Why -- there have only been variations of BBS's since 1981 or so, and the Web Board's only been around since fifteen minutes after UIUC first successfully had two computers talk to each other with pictures.)

Kind of reminds me of the Baen Bar (http://bar.baen.com). They use an old version of this really grotty software called Webboard that tries to be all things to all people--a web bulletin board, email, and NNTP (in a very buggy and non-RFC-compliant sort of way)--and ends up not doing any of them very well. It seems to crash at least twice a week, and gets an average of one or two "I can't access the bar!" complaints a day.

But for some insane reason, almost everyone seems to like it.
