Over on Websnark I play things cool. I snark. Its what I do, right?

Here, it's just me.

I've been doing this for a week. I have gone from serving up about eight megabytes of bandwidth a day, mostly from old essays or the In Nomine site.. Yesterday, largely on the basis of notice from PvP's forums and a mention in Comixpedia's Blog component, I went up to half a gigabyte's bandwidth. In one day.

And at the very end of the day? Scott Kurtz, the artist of PvP linked me from his front page, positively.

I'm going to get absolutely buried tomorrow. I may have to upgrade my hosting lest I get nuked in bandwidth costs. I'm absolutely stunned. And thousands upon thousands of different people read my writing today.

I figure this won't last. I'm a flavor of the month. Nothing wrong with that, of course. But for the moment, I'm into my 15 minutes.

I've been doing this for a week.

Jesus Christ. This is a rush.

I imagine so. :) In all honesty, though, you are doing a good job with Websnark, and you deserve any publicity you get. :)

(Mild irony: in the week since you started Websnark, Megatokyo has updated on time every day. ;)

Incidentally, looking at Something Positive today - I'm not sure, since I don't have the connection speed to go through the entire three-year archive - but I think today is the first time in the history of the strip that Davan has been referred to as "Mr. MacIntire".

Hey Eric-

I found you again...via PvP! Hopefully you'll read and respond. I'm listed as Kamikaze42 here on livejournal.com, but you knew me simply as Kamikaze, back in the old days of Bitnet, and I new you as Sabre. Along with Wolverine, who moved to Ithaca, we hung out in the Pink Iguana Tavern. Please get back to me, it's been a long time and I've news to share.

PS-Nice entry on WebSnark about the latest PvP thread!

Hell, I'm stunned by the amount of CONTENT that's gone up in that time. If you put this energy into Superguy, you'd be up to #200 by the end of the month.

And if Superguy posts could be done in seven minutes and under 200 words, it would be done ;)

You might look at Dreamhost -- they just instituted a bandwidth calculation thing that drops the highest trafficked day from the totals. This helps smaller sites that get Slashdotted.

They're pretty decent people, too -- when someone found an exploit on their servers to launch a massive DNS attack, Dreamhost fixed the exploit so it couldn't happen again and created an off-site status website to keep their customers informed of server issues (they weren't even able to inform their customers during the attack). While they were doing that, they even explained exactly what happened, took the blame for allowing this to happen, outlined the steps they were taking to make sure it didn't happen again, and apologized to all their customers. Even though there are some places that have cheaper hosting costs, these guys are a good bunch.

(If you do decide to use Dreamhost (http://dreamhost.com), go ahead and tell them "fauxpas" referred you. It won't cost you anything. It'll just help to lower my bill if you sign up.)

I'll second the Dreamhost pimpage. Good people to do business with. I'm been using them for a while now. Very good on the customer service front.

Well, having run into Websnark through FOAF LJ browsing, I have to ask: is it all right if I link to it as well, or do you want folks to wait until your PVP flood abates?

(Warning: I run through an average 1.5 gigs of bandwidth per day, mostly eaten up hosting four web comics. I have not a clue what that would do to your own bandwidth issues...)

Feel free! If Bandwidth becomes a real issue, I'll do something about it!

It is a good site. You're doing a great job.
