I suppose picking any given day of the year as New Years is arbitrary--one of the solstices undoubtedly would have a better claim--but there IS a pretty well defined jaunt around the sun that one couldn't claim as arbitrary, I mean, a year really does MEAN something, it's not just a human constructed category...

I may be reading too much into this.

One of the problems with being a liberal is you build up friendships with people more on the fringe. Moderate Conservatives have to cope with Dittoheads and Jingoists spinning everything in their direction. I have to deal with people for whom every societal creation is somehow oppressive or bourgeois. Or worse, oppressively bourgeois.
