That I won't divulge. I have some supporters who'd go and disagree. Perhaps loudly. And the thing is, the position was well writ and legitimate, so it would be both ironic and hypocritical to release the hounds on it. ;)
I have no idea what's going on, but I guess someone whined at you, "Awww, gee Eric. I want you to stay exactly the same person with the same creative desires, goals, and interests that you did when you first became an internet micro-celebrity in 2004."
I know having everyone kissing your ass is real seductive and you want to do what you can to keep those lips on your behind, but let's get serious: You're doing this as a passtime, right? You have a real job in the real world, and when it comes down to it, electronic fame is about as meaningful as passing gas.
Yeah, you have some influence now, and yeah people have come to look upon what you do seriously. But you know what, just because some people are whining about their unfulfilled hero worship (Assuming I'm right) doesn't mean that YOU should be taking it seriously as well.
Eric, having some perspective about the web is important. A lot of people dont have it. Don't slip into the same La-la Land, and just do what you feel is best for you, the guy doing the actual work. The only person who has to live your life is you.
Get what I'm saying?
And if I'm wrong for the reasons for this mope, well, the idea is a good one anyway.
I can agree with the first sentence - Websnark used to be written purely by you and tended to cover webcomics, often multiple webcomics in one day. Now it has a second writer, and the webcomic coverage is trending somewhat downward as we get snarks on, well, Pages, DC Countdown, and roleplaying games all recently. And it's trending a bit more towards "One post a day."
There are a lot fewer thumbnails of comics.
We have not found out what happened to Annie in some time.
What isn't true is that you're losing "it." You're just losing him. You had him, and you lost him. :)
Me, I still like it. Although I would love to see the sporadically checked trawl. And the shortbreads. And the Annie update. And, well, webcomic content.
But I like most of the new content too, so whatever. :)
personally i'm still waiting to hear "crisis on infinate snarks" announced. I too miss hearing about specfic strips, but hey it's FREE CONTENT and to be honest, if that's what he and weds feel like writing about, we can't really complain.
There's a zits on this topic somewhere, illustrates the point extremely well.
Actually, yes we can complain. Just because it's free dosn't mean the audience isn't allowed to voice an opinion when things start to change. But it also means that Eric has nothing forcing him to respond to the complaints. Most of the audience of websnark hopped on board because of the webcomic focus. It has become a decently large part of the webcomic community. If the focus changes, then it is bound to lose some of the audience it picked it up. Websnark drew me in because it was well-written essays and comments on a topic I was interested in. If it changes from that, I have the right to comment on it and to stop reading it, but again, it doesn't mean Eric has to change.
I do miss getting several posts a day commenting on specific web comics. I picked up a good dozen strips because of Websnark, so I miss getting that lead in to new comics. But I'm still enjoying reading about whatever's written there (though Weds whole series on the Chick Tracts made me go 'Huh?').
Of course, anything in public view is in danger of getting over analyzed, and I think that Websnark just hit that benchmark. ;)

Absolutely. I have no argument with the complaint. Nor did it bother me per se.
It's just a milestone. One of the big ones.
I'm going to keep writing... well, what I feel like writing, when I feel like writing it. I'll also do my best to incorporate some of the comments the person made, because they were apropos.
While it's true that Eric isn't getting payed for any of his Websnark writing and therefore owes nothing, one can still bemoan the sad turn it's taking toward irrelivancy. Websnark was a great thing to happen to webcomics. As per "The Person", "It's not just that we're attention whores (we are), but it improves the entire field to get real feedback." Websnark served to help organize, formalize, lexicalize, generalize - and all but unionize - the language of discourse on webcomics. Therefore, as Eric talks less and less about webcomics he is becoming less and less relevant. Several other blogs and communities about webcomics exist, but none are the authority Websanrk is. So if we were indeed to lose Websnark to general snarking, it would be bad for webcomics and their fans. Eventually a new place will emerge to discuss webcomics, but we'd all rather see Websnark still up there.
